African-Style Dance

AFRICAN STYLE DANCE-  “If you can talk you can sing, if you walk you can dance”  this old Zimbabwe proverb embodies the essence of African Dancing.  It invigorates both the body and soul with the earthy rhythms of African drums.  No prior dance experience is required just an open attitude is all you need—all worldly worries leave at the door.  African style dancing comes from a place of celebration and story.  Although it is a fairly rigorous dance style (you will sweat) Karin teaches modified no impact alternatives. Most of the movements are derived from daily living and rituals that give thanks or teach—but the most endearing aspect of this dance is the sense of community.  So turn off the cell phone, the computer--the world and come connect with others for an hour of fun.  Be prepared to smile from head to toe.

What to Wear-  Comfortable clothes you can move in.  Tights with a lapa (a sarong like piece of material) is traditional attire but is not needed to dance.

Karin Devaney-  Has been a student of African Dance since moving to California in 1990.  She has studied with teachers from around the globe including Zimbabwe, the Congo, Haiti, Nairobi, and other areas in West Africa.  In addition, she has danced with local teachers, Victoria Strowbridge, Chris Freewoman, and J.J. Medica.
